More Members’ Stories

Norman When our family first moved to central Lancashire I expressed an interest in finding a new hobby.

Time passed by and some years later my wife became engaged in conversation with another young mum waiting outside our local primary school and happened to mention my interest. This lady informed my wife that her husband was a member of a barbershop chorus in Preston.

I had seen an American barbershop quartet on TV some years previously but wasn't aware that there were barbershop clubs in the UK.

Although I hadn't sung since I was a Lifebuoy at the age of eleven, I accepted an invitation to meet the lady’s husband Mike, at their home the following evening to learn more about barbershop.

After an introductory chat, Mike played an LP of the 140 man 'Vocal Majority Chorus' of Dallas,Texas and another LP of the International Championship Quartet 'The Boston Common'. I was awe-struck and seeing my reaction, Mike invited me to attend an open night that the club was holding the following Thursday.

After a brief voice test, Barry the Musical Director, positioned me in the midst of the bass section and I was immediately hooked on harmony.

I have never forgotten the welcome I received on that, my first visit to the Red Rose Chorus thirty-two years ago and ever since I have tried to ensure that I extend a warm welcome to every  new visitor to our weekly rehearsals.

My becoming a member of the British Association of Barbershop Singers and my wife a member of the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers has enriched our lives.
