1998

The year began with a forced move of rehearsal venue when the Baxi Sports Club at Bamber Bridge closed down. The new venue was Springfields Social Centre, Salwick Club. The new venue was a little challenging as it had recently had a £75,000 makeover and there was concern about the risers damaging the floor. A solution was found - Some rolls of tartan cloth were laid on the polished floor. The Wengers were then lifted into position by the ‘big men of the bass section’. The chorus now had 60 members.

On January 29th there was a social evening at Fleetwood with the Red Rose Chorus, Red Rosettes and Fleetwood Choral Society.

In February:

The entertainers rule ‘never perform with animals or children’ was broken when the Red Rose Chorus joined with the children of Kirkland Junior School Choir. The children’s first half with songs from ‘Snow White’ and ‘Mary Poppins’ contrasted with the men’s second half with a finale of nursery rhymes joining the two groups together in a barbershop arrangement that raised the roof and the school bus fund by £300

Father and daughter Alan and Helen Wright took part in the event and were photographed for the press.

In April the Chorus came first in the Crosby Festival of Music and Dancing Golden Jubilee, after warming up on the car park, in the dark.

Convention was at Harrogate, in May. The lists seem to sow that 53 members went although there are not that many on the photo.

This was written by new member Duncan Smith:

So there I was in the Harrogate warm-up room at long last. I’d managed to track down a 19 inch wing collar shirt to go with the snazzy suit. I was really ready … just a t..teeny problem. A chap came along and said I wasn’t REGISTERED WITH BABS. Flaps were definitely flapping but not me, cool as a … Must be some sort of record to join BABS two hours before climbing on to the risers to compete. It certainly made my first convention a memorable occasion, especially being place 7th.

Serenade (Quartet) came 9th.

There were several charity events later in the year, including Leonard Cheshire Golden Jubilee and Hospice Care for Burnley & Pendle.
